But, the change that is occurring here in the small town of Gray in the heart of the Lord's people isn't just me. You see, I've often heard a statistic, whether it is a factually based one or one like "97% of statistics are made up, including this one" type of thing I'm unsure, that states that 20% of the people do 80% of the work in any given congregation. And if I were asked I would have to say that statistic was somewhat true of the congregation just one short month ago, but not anymore! In actuality, 80% of the word "Queue" is silent just like 80% of members of the Body of Christ are primarily. With all of that untapped evangelistic potential what is the Lord's church to do about turning it around and making the "Queue of Christian Workers" into the "Q of Christian Workers" and have 100% of the word be in use?
- Work Together To Develop Ideas! - If you know me, I am a stickler for keeping with sermon series or Bible class series that I am doing. In fact, there have been times that I have morphed a current event sermon into a series sermon, not always to be betterment of either, just to keep with the series I'm doing. But, one Wednesday night last month I broke from my OCD and, without the knowledge of the congregation until the class period started, had what I called an "Evangelistic Barnstorming Session" where we sat down together and came up with ideas of how we could reach our entire community with the Gospel by the end of 2014. I can't explain how uplifting it was to me and how encouraging it was to the congregation. This is primarily because of one thing - The evangelistic events that are planned are not "the preacher's events" or "the so-and-so's events" but are our events. It's simply amazing what a small congregation can get done when we sit down together and utilize the talents of everyone involved for the glory of God!
- Get Convicted! - I know I have been convicted of the Truth since my becoming a Christian, and I am fairly confident in saying that my brethren at our congregation have been too, but once we really realized that we in fact weren't doing all we could do to please God and spread His Kingdom everything changed. In one week the congregation passed out 750 flyer cards for our Gospel meeting that was last week! There might have been a number of reasons why that is (having business cards instead of full-page flyers so it was easier for people to stick a few in their pocket in the morning and pass them out throughout the day, a "catchy" name for the meeting, a topic that a large number of people today need, a preacher that causes congregation to budget money to repaint because of his "preaching the paint off of the walls", etc) but I'm convinced the main reason was because we saw that something in fact was missing in our faithfulness to God.
- Encourage Each Other - I can't tell you how big the eyes in the auditorium got when the next Sunday I announced that we had passed out that much material in just a week without having any booths or door-knocking campaigns! And that same day, after being encouraged by myself and other members, I was facing the problem of potentially running out of advertisements for the meeting a week before it actually started! None of us really understand what Hebrews 13:1 and Hebrews 10:24 means until it happens! It lights a fire under us and that same day I had members of the youth group asking if they could take a hand full of cards to pass out at school.
All this is true and every one of the points will help but there's one thing that we can never forget. Regardless of how you go about your evangelism, just TRY! If we are trying, He will help!
