Well, then I got to thinking about just HOW they were working together to make that sunset. You see, some were one color and others another, some were closer to me so they were brighter and more visible while others were in the background working to produce the different shadows and hues and then you have to take into consideration what it took to set everything up like that. In Gray, GA I think it has rained every day for a month and if it hasn't it's getting pretty close to that milestone. I bet all this rain and cloud cover had something to do with the amount of moisture was in the air last night to make the clouds and the dark blue tint of the sky!
Now what does all of this have to do with the Bible? Many would point to Psalm 19:1, others might think of the first few chapters of Genesis and how God created everything that came into play last night for the sunset, and while all those things are absolutely true let's think about 1 Corinthians 12:12-20. Just as our physical bodies and the church of Christ have many things (members) working together, the sunset did as well.
I think sometimes we forget that it's not just the ones that are out front and "brighter" that make up the great work done by the church but that without those behind them setting the stage, as it were, and creating depth there would be no great works of the church. As a preacher I often think about, read and listen to the "big name" preachers of the brotherhood of the years gone by. I even have many books written by these men and audio sermons they presented and I remember how great and knowledgeable they were. But then I remember the members at the congregations where they preached that are never citied in papers or talked about at the preachers' meetings.
Every one of us, whether "bright" or in the background, make the church what it is... The Best Institution God Has Ever Given Us and the best this world has or will ever see. So let's not really worry about how big we are or feel as though we are in the background and unappreciated because God sees His church as a beautiful sunset, everything working in order to provide some beauty in a world filled with ugliness!
